Performance Clothing Designer
Our client is a leading supplier of protective clothing to the military, special forces and emergency services. They have developed a specialist reputation for designing and engineering some of the best quality, functional clothing & equipment out there. Based in Devon they are now looking to strengthen their team with a Designer who has a real interest in this highly technical field.
Performance Clothing Designer - The role:
- This role is in a very fast paced environment based full time in Exeter.
- You will be working alongside a talented team and have access to the on site production unit.
- Your remit will be to develop cutting edge technical clothing and accessories for the military and law enforcement.
- Conduct research on materials, textiles, and new technologies to enhance product performance and innovation.
- Work closely with product managers, fabric specialists, pattern makers, and the production team to bring design concepts to life.
- Coordinate with external suppliers and manufacturers to ensure designs meet production deadlines, cost specifications, and quality standards.
- Oversee the creation of prototypes and conduct field testing to assess performance under various conditions (e.g., extreme weather, tactical operations).
- Make necessary design adjustments based on feedback from testing and user input.
- Stay current on industry trends, technological advancements, and competitor products to drive innovation in design.
- Attend trade shows, conferences, and collaborate with military personnel or tactical experts to stay ahead of the market.
- Ensure designs meet all technical specifications for fit, function, and durability.
- Oversee the quality control process during the production phase to ensure consistency with design standards.
- Maintain design archives and production notes, including material sourcing, colorways, and manufacturing processes.
- Present designs and progress reports to senior leadership, ensuring alignment with company goals.
- There will be some overseas travel involved.
Performance Clothing Designer - The candidate:
- You must have 2 or more years of experience of designing technical products and have a passion for this product area.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in designing functional, durable, and high-performance apparel.
- Must be competent with Illustrator and Photoshop. Plus ideally CLO3D.
- A clear understanding of how to build a full technical pack, including Bill of Materials
- A clear understanding of garment construction and commercial garment manufacturing for technical outerwear
- A good knowledge of fabrics - woven and knitted - with the ability to develop/source new fabrics
- Print and graphic design knowledge would be beneficial
- Must be able to communicate ideas and present collections, both internally and externally, to suppliers and customers
- Must be a team player
